Trojans topple Panthers on the mats
Fairfield rolls in SEC boys dual, Mt. Pleasant takes girls matches
FAIRFIELD The Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant wrestling teams braved the snowy weather on Thursday night to meet up at Fairfield High School to renew their Highway 34 rivalry on the mats. By the end of the night, it was the Trojans who were used to seeing their hands raised.
Fairfield won seven matches in a row between 157 pounds and 106 pounds, en route to a 57-18 win over their rival.
"Our guys are starting to have more confidence in their shots and in their ability on the mat,“ said I'm just really proud of them for gutting it out.”
The dual was tight at the outset. Fairfield won three of the first five matches, but the two teams were tied 12-12 going into the 157-pound match.
Cason Miller, who recently returned from injury for Fairfield, sparked a big Trojan run at 157 pounds. Miller earned a pinfall and the Trojans won seven matches in a row to put the night in the books.
“A lot of our guys that would have gotten pinned earlier in the year fought a full match,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Anthony Blint. “They didn't give up. That was a plus for our young team.”
Mt. Pleasant went 2-0 in the girls’ matches. Paris Phosy pinned Fairfield’s Vianney Gonzalez in 1 minute, 32 seconds, and Katana Phangchanthong defeated Fairfield’s Katie Scotton in a thrilling extra period match, which finished in 6:35.
