Trojans win freshman, JV matches
The Fairfield ninth-grade and JV volleyball teams started Tuesday off right in their respective home matches vs. Fort Madison.
The ninth-grade squad lost their first game 25-19 but rallied for back-to-back wins by scores of 25-19 and 15-9. The JV team topped Fort Madison with a little less fanfare, winning a two-set match 25-7, 25-19.

The Fairfield ninth-grade and JV volleyball teams started Tuesday off right in their respective home matches vs. Fort Madison.
The ninth-grade squad lost their first game 25-19 but rallied for back-to-back wins by scores of 25-19 and 15-9. The JV team topped Fort Madison with a little less fanfare, winning a two-set match 25-7, 25-19.
Valerie Vayne and Seaira Drish led the Trojan JV team with three aces apiece, and Karley Williams was 7-for-7 behind the service line with two aces. Madison Roberts smoked five kills, while McKenna Ledger had two kills and a pair of blocks and Keri Schwarz had two kills and a block. Erica Winslow tacked on four assists.
In the freshman match, Fairfield?s Mackenzi Harwood had eight kills and 16 digs while Mackenzie Flattery dug up a team-high 25 balls. Kelsey Roberts had two aces on 13-for-15 serving, and she added 14 assists and nine digs. Alli Deao finished the match with six kills, Delaney Neil had three blocks and Emma Kuehl tacked on nine assists.
Fairfield?s ninth-grade squad will be back in action Saturday at its very own Fairfield Invite against Central Lee, Van Buren and Ottumwa. Both teams will host Mount Pleasant next Tuesday.
JV team plays Saturday
JOHNSTON ? The Fairfield JV team won three of five matches at the Johnston Invite on Saturday.
The Trojans opened the tournament with a 21-14, 21-19 victory over Carlisle. They lost to Indianola (17-21, 14-21) and Johnston (12-21, 22-24) but finished the day strong with a pair of three-set wins over Southeast Polk (21-16, 19-21, 16-14) and Oskaloosa (21-13, 15-21, 15-6).
Karley Williams led the Trojans with 19 kills, 43 digs and 17 assists. Madison Roberts finished with 17 kills and 23 digs, and Seaira Drish had 35 assists. Jolea Burkhart totaled 43 digs and Keri Schwarz blocked four shots.
