The Fairfield boys basketball team doubled up Central Lee 68-34 on the scoreboard during Tuesday night's Pride scrimmage held in the FHS gym following the girl's season opening win over Burlington.
The Trojans full-court pressure on defense discombobulated the Hawks attempts to cross mid-court in a direct path, let alone set up an effective offense if and when they did.
'Our full court pressure defense has been a staple in our program,” explained head coach Mick Flattery. 'We run a variety of pressures depending on where we pick the opponent up at. I thought we were very active tonight.”
Size wise, the Trojans were too much for the more modestly built men of Central Lee.
'We're not huge, but we do have length,” said Flattery. 'It can be an advantage for us when we use it. We had a lot of put backs that led to scoring tonight. Sometimes the best interior post pass is a miss that we go get and score on.”
As for the team's stature stacking up against bigger opponents.
'We will face all types of sizes,” explained Flattery. We think we can compete quite well versus all of them.”
Austin Simpson scored 20 points and added 11 rebounds and three assists to lead the Trojans while Tristin Waugh and Collin Breen also recorded double digit point totals with 11 and 10, respectively. Other scorers included: Cole Engle eight, Carson Crile seven, Mark Diers 3, Matthew Swanson three, Drew Martin two, Elan Ledger two and Landon Kooiker two.
Tuesday the Trojans rotated eight deep before emptying the bench at the beginning of the fourth and celebrating the preseason victory with some good will towards man.
'Happy Thanksgiving to all Trojan fans,” Flattery concluded. 'We look forward to getting things started Tuesday at Oskaloosa.”
