While Fairfield added one win and one loss to its record Tuesday night, the Trojans now have their sights set on their biggest game of the year.
Tuesday?s regular season finale against Oskaloosa saw Fairfield take an 8-4 win in game two after losing the 3-0 opener that now sets them up for Friday?s District 11 opener against Fort Madison Friday in Keokuk. Four pitchers made their way out to the mound in Tuesday?s tune up including Trojan ace Dylan Gilpin who started game one.
?We looked at the doubleheader as a chance to warm up going into districts on Friday. I feel like all four of the pitchers that threw did a nice job for us,? said head coach Josh Allison.
In the game one loss, the Trojans recorded just two hits ? both from Jake Dunbar ? off Indian starter Austin Westercamp. Oskaloosa then scored after two Trojan errors in the bottom of the third, which proved to be all they would need.
?[Westercamp] didn?t throw very hard but it kept us off balance all night and we had a hard time making the adjustment,? Allison said.
With Willie Ghent getting the game two pitching nod, the Trojan offense broke out of its funk to the tune of eight runs in the 8-4 win. Dunbar held on to his hot bat as he smacked double on his way to scoring two runs. Brandon Ford also had a double while RBI hits came from Lucas James, Gilpin, Ghent and two from Dakota Simmons.
While doubleheader splits have became somewhat of a routine for the Trojans in 2009, they only have one chance to get past their first round district opponent Fort Madison Friday. Fairfield won three of four games against the Bloodhounds this season including a two-game sweep in the most recent meeting on June 29. Keokuk will host Friday?s game, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. first pitch.
