Southeastern Community College is set to add a Washington runner to its cross country and track ranks. Demons senior Sawyer Tschantz signed to run for the Blackhawks at the college level next season.
Flanked by family, friends and coaches, Tschantz participated in a signing ceremony Wednesday at Washington High School.
“I’ve really enjoyed all the people that have been here and helping me get to where I am,” Tschantz said. “All the coaches have been amazing, and my training has just helped me get to where I’m going to be.”
A four year member of the Demons cross country team, Tschantz competed in two Iowa High School Cross Country Championships and has a pair 10th place finishes at the Southeast Conference boys meet. He set a personal record 16:58.04 at the 3A state qualifying race last season.
Tschantz will compete in his final track season at Washington this spring. He set season high marks of 2:05.67 in the 800 and 4:38.82 in the 1,600. He was also part of a 4x800 team that finished eighth place in the 2025 Iowa State Track and Field Championships.
At Southeastern, will Tschantz run for coach Lucas Keifer, who has served as the Blackhawks men’s and women’s track and cross country coach since 2020. Tschantz is looking forward to the challenge of navigating 8k races at the college level after competing in 5k events on the high school cross country circuit.
“I really like the community, and I really like the coach too,” Tschantz said of picking Southeastern. “And I knew a lot of people that were going there and it all just connected.”
Before he heads to college, Tschantz’s goal is to reach the state meet on the track with Washington. Some of his favorite memories with teammates off the course include group camping trips and Monday movie nights.
