The first full day of high school basketball since New Year’s Day saw 2022 pick up where 2021 left off on Tuesday night.
New London and Winfield-Mount Union stayed unbeaten atop their respective divisions. WACO and Hillcrest Academy continue to follow close behind with a pair of dominant wins.
No. 10 New London 69, Notre Dame 48
New London went into Burlington and beat SEISC South rival Notre Dame by 21 points. The Tigers, currently ranked 10th in Class 1A, are now 6-0 at the top of the league.
Kade Benjamin scored 18 to lead the Tigers. Blaise Porter and Devin Swanson each tacked on 14 to give the Tigers three double-digit scorers.
WACO 69, Central Lee 28
The Warriors blasted Central Lee in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division matchup in Donnellson. WACO led 15-4 after one quarter, 27-15 at halftime and 53-23 after three periods.
The Warriors have now won six of their last seven games. They are 4-2 in the South, two games behind New London for first.
Danville 46, Cardinal 37
Cardinal couldn’t keep pace in the SEISC South race, dropping its third game in conference play.
The Comets led 11-6 after one quarter, but Danville dominated the second quarter to lead 25-17, and the Bears never looked back.
West Burlington 81, Van Buren County 42
The Falcons were too much for the Warriors in SEISC South play. West Burlington rolled to victory and dropped Van Buren to 1-7 in the process.
Despite the loss, Jackson Manning continues to impress. He led VBC with 15 points on the night.
Winfield-Mount Union 64, Columbus 11
WMU continued to dominate the SEISC’s North Division. The Wolves led 17-6 after one quarter, and outscored the Wildcats 47-5 for the rest of the night.
Abram Edwards finished with 20 points for the Wolves. Carter Loyd scored 11, and Cam Buffington had 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
WMU is now 7-0 in conference play.
Hillcrest Academy 66, Lone Tree 44
The Ravens picked up another North Division win to stay one game behind WMU in the standings. Hillcrest led by just two, at 19-17 after one quarter, but dominated from that point forward.
Grant Bender poured in 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Ravens. Luke Schrock had 16.
Montezuma 66, Keota 53
The Eagle fell at home in South Iowa Cedar League action, dropping a West Division game to Montezuma.
Sawyer Stout put up 17 points for Keota, and Evan Vittetoe ended the night with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
