WASHINGTON — The Demons and Comets split games at Washington High School. The Demons won a blistering season opener, but the Comets earned revenge in game two.
In a game that saw 27 players cross the plate, runs were piling up right away, as Cardinal led Washington 4-3 in the first inning. The Demons used an eight-run third to take an 11-7 lead, and Cardinal never had the game tied up again.
Isabella Salazar went off in Game 1, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs at the plate. Olivia Hamilton was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Leighton Salazar and Ella Greiner each had two hits.
Isabella Salazar earned the win, giving up 10 runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks. Claire Robinson came in to pitch in relief and gave up three earned runs over two innings.
Cardinal bounced right back in Game 2. The Comets scored the first five runs of the ballgame en route to a 7-2 victory.
Van Buren County 11, Pekin 6
PACKWOOD — The Warriors scored seven runs over their last two at bats to vanquish rival Pekin in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference crossover.
Sophomore Ivy Davidson went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Annabelle Cormier finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Both Cala Smith and Alli Campbell knocked in a run, and Kylee Roen collected a pair of hits.
Highland 13, Hillcrest Academy 0 (4)
RIVERSIDE — A Huskies squad that made it one game short of the Class 1A state tournament last season got off to a hot start against the visiting Ravens.
Highland scored two runs in the first, eight in the second and three in the third to put the game away.
The Huskies have now won 19 straight softball games against their SEISC North Division rivals.
Louisa-Muscatine 10, Winfield-Mount Union 8
WINFIELD — The Winfield-Mount Union offense was firing but the Wolves couldn’t hold off the defending SEISC North Division champions, falling by two runs.
Meline Oepping was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the loss. Jobey Malone collected two hits. Aurey Meeker, Katie Miller, Keely Malone, Josie Nelson and Carlee Sloan each knocked in one run.
Columbus 14, Lone Tree 4
The Columbus softball team moved to 2-0 with its second-straight SEISC North Division win. The Wildcats scored seven runs in the second, two in the third and five in the fifth.
