Two Trojan wrestlers top the field in Mediapolis

MEDIAPOLIS ? The Fairfield wrestling team had won the Mediapolis Invitational the past two years, but that streak came to a halt Saturday with a limited number of black-and-orange singlets taking the mat.

The Trojans, down several wrestlers due to illness or others in action at the JV tournament in Keokuk, settled for fourth in the team standings with 123 points. Mediapolis won the tournament with 199.5 points.

Out of Fairfield?s nine wrestlers in attendance, seven of them placed in the tournament.

?We did a lot better,? said Fairfield head coach Steve Miller. ?Overall, I was really pleased with all their efforts. They battled hard and are improving technique-wise, so it?s nice to see.?

Junior Seth Davisson (182) and Tanner Metcalf (220) went 2-0 on the day to finish first in their respective weight classes. Both received first-round byes before pinning their final two opponents. Davisson won his finals match by fall in 5:39, while Metcalf pinned his final opponent in 1:18.

Ammon Shaner (138), Quinton Bradfield (152) and Alec Stoner (285) also found themselves in the finals matches but were forced to settle for second place with losses.

Aaron Gevock, a junior, finished the tournament with a win. Gevock came into the tournament seeded fifth at 145 and ended up in third place. Sophomore Wyatt Bruce also placed, finishing fifth at 113.

Fairfield will return to the mat with a dual meet against Oskaloosa Thursday.
