Two of four Highland wrestlers did well Saturday, Feb. 4, at sectionals wrestling action to keep their chances at a state berth alive.
Cory Stewart (132) won second place in the wrestle back and Brady Hahn (138) won second place in wrestle back competition as well.
?If there is a definition for ?roller coaster ride? in the dictionary, it might reference Cory Stewart,? says Highland wrestling coach Clint Jones.
He started out by earning a fall against Max McCulley from Louisa-Muscatine (L-M) in the opening round. In his semi-final match against Javis Krieger from New London, he lost at the very end of the match.
?It was a heartbreaking loss, no other way to describe it,? said Jones.
Stewart rebounded though and wrestled a solid match against Blair Noble from Wapello, winning 10-1.
He then had light with Krieger winning in the finals against Jerome Mays from Wilton and now had an opportunity for a true wrestle back for second place.
?It was a solid performance for the day and he keeps his season alive with that win,? Jones said. Stewart?s season record stands at 29-8.
Hahn also propelled himself in the right direction to start the day by earning a pin in the first period against Christian Tennant from WACO.
In his semi-final match, he faced Hunter Aney from Mediapolis, a familiar opponent, and won by a 1-0 decision.
He wrestled tough in his finals match against Austin Leopard from L-M, but give Leopard credit for initiating some nice take downs against Brady.
?Brady is wrestling well,? Jones said. ?He is realizing that good fundamental positioning may not be flashy, but it certainly has value, and that value enables him to win tough matches like the match against Aney.
?He put himself in another position to compete at districts.? His season record sits at 26-13.
