KEOKUK - Three straight games of at least 62 points from a high school basketball team might be worth noting but from a football team, it is impressive. Washington accomplished that feat with Friday's Class 3A District 5 road win. The fifth-ranked Demons dismantled Keokuk 62-8. Last week was 69-0 and 68-20 before that.
The Demons had a mission, to win a district title, the first since 2013.
'Our guys came out ready to play,” WHS head coach James Harris said. 'This district title was earned with commitment, personal sacrifice and sweat equity. I'm so proud of players and our coaches.”
That earned equity was put to work right away with Washington leading 28-0 at the end of the first quarter and 48-8 at halftime.
The best moment for the home crowd may have been when a helicopter landed at midfield with the ceremonial game ball as the Chiefs sponsored Heroes Night.
Washington had its heroes, accomplishing the first unbeaten regular season since, 'I believe it was 1968,” Harris said.
Some heroes for the Demons were: the defense, which held the Chiefs to negative 11 yards rushing, Bryan Martin, who had a 63-yard touchdown catch, Wyatt Stout, who had three TDs including a 40-yarder and seven tackles on defense, Ethan Patterson, who had three TD runs, two catches for 62 yards and was 2-of-3 passing, Spencer Sotelo, who had two receptions for 71 yards including a score and an interception, Lucas Kroll, who had a 53-yard TD catch, Trashaun Willis, who was 7-for-12 for 261 yards with three TDs and had 5.5 tackles, Wilx Witthoft, who had a fumble recovery, Reece Mayer and Zayne Laws, who had six tackles each. and the lineman.
'Hats off to all our offensive coaches who have had tremendous game plans, hitting on all cylinders,” Harris said. 'The defense did a great job but I wish we hadn't given up a score where we got a little complacent. That will get us beat in the playoffs.”
The Demons have a first-round bye with a 7-0 overall record, 5-0 in the district, then will play the winner of Fairfield (1-6, 0-5) and Keokuk (3-3, 2-2).
