Union area cross-country individuals, teams move up in rankings

TROY MILLS — Saturday’s cross-country races at the Lynx Invitational seem to have made an impression on the voters from the Iowa Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches. The Oct. 12 Week 7 (of nine) rankings had Washington’s boys up a spot at No. 16 and the girls up two at No. 18.

Lance Sobaski moved up a spot to No. 6 in Class 3A and Washington teammate Micah Rees is 24. Mt. Pleasant’s Abby Blint moved up to No. 16.

Mid-Prairie’s teams remained at the top of Class 2A for the girls and fourth for the boys. Danielle Hostetler is in the same top-ranked position as all season. Teammates Phoebe Shetler and Mitzi Evans are Nos. 15 and 26 respectively while twins Sydney and Jaden Yoder are Nos. 14 and 19, respectively.

Thaddeus Shetler of Mid-Prairie was ranked seventh in 2A while Danville/New London’s Ty Carr was third and Alexander Julian is eighth. Bears teammate Rylan Martin is No. 24 and Seth Bailey is No. 26. Danville-New London was in the same spot as every previous ranking in 2A boys, No. 1.

In 1A, Pekin’s girls stayed at No. 3 behind No. 17 Lauren Dersheid and No. 25 Lauren Steigleder.

Columbus boys moved up to its highest ranking this season at No. 14. Freddy Vergara of Columbus is ranked at 19 but Pekin’s Zach Wise moved past him to 18.
