The Union fall sports season saw an abundance of great teams and more than plenty of standout athletes.
Before Thanksgiving, Iowa High School Girls Basketball kicked off its season, but with Thanksgiving now in the rear view the winter sports season will now be in full swing.
For the Union area’s big schools — Washington, Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant — it’s sure to be an enticing one.
Here we will take a look at this weeks upcoming matchups that continue and kickoff the winter season.
Looking at this week for the Washington Demons, it’s a busy one.
The Demon’s boys and girls bowling teams will head over to Fairfield on Monday to kick off the season.
Washington boys and girls wrestling will be in action at home on Tuesday. The boys and girls will host Highland, Iowa Valley and HLV for the first tournament of the year.
In basketball, both the Washington boys and girls basketball teams will head to Fairfield for an Southeast Conference clash.
The Demon girls have already picked up one win on the season, blistering Anamosa 62-19. As for Fairfield, the Trojans dropped their first game of the season Mid-Prairie 59-42.
Fairfield won both games against Washington last season and have won 16 straight over the Demons.
On the boys side, the matchup will mark the beginning of the season for the Demons.
Washington took both games last year and has a six game streak on the Trojans.
Looking at Fairfield, along with bowling against Washington, the Trojan girls wrestling team will be down in Fort Madison on Monday competing in the Fort Madison Invitational against Anamosa, Highland, Burlington Notre Dame and Muscatine.
Trojan boys and girls basketball will be in Oskaloosa on Tuesday night. The game will be the first of the season for the boys. It will be the second of the season for the Trojan girls.
Fairfield got the better of Oskaloosa on both sides last season.
The boys wrestling team will head down to Keokuk on Thursday for the Keokuk Quad against Keokuk, Davis County and Centerville beginning the season.
Following the pair of basketball games against Washington on Friday, the Trojans will wrap up their sports week against Ottumwa on Saturday.
For Mt. Pleasant, the boys and girls basketball teams will kick off the week.
Mt. Pleasant will head up to Cedar Rapids Washington on Monday night to match up with the Warriors. It’s the Panthers first game of the season. Mt. Pleasant fell to Cedar Rapids Washington last season.
The girls will play host to Ottumwa on Monday night. Mt. Pleasant comes into the game off a tough loss to Pella 51-37. They have won four straight against Ottumwa.
Boys Wrestling will begin the season on Tuesday with a head-to-head against Columbus at home.
On Friday, the Panthers basketball teams will wrap their week against Fort Madison.
The Mt. Pleasant boys will host Fort Madison, while the girls will head out of town. The Panther boys dropped both matchups last season and the girls split with the Bloodhounds.
Ending the Panthers week is the girls and boys wrestling team on Saturday. Panther wrestling will head to Wapello High School to compete in the Willard Howell Wrestling Tournament.
