Union area small schools open summer sports

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference saw a lot of softball and baseball Monday to open the season.
Batchelor tosses no-hitter
Highland won 12-0 in four innings over Hillcrest in this SEISC North game as Grace Batchelor tossed four innings of no-hit ball with seven strikeouts. Kayla Cerney had three hits.
Hillcrest wins
The Ravens scored a North win by the score of 8-5. Highland's Mason McFarland hit a double while Cael Yeggy and Connor Grinstead each had two hits.
New London sweeps Pekin
The New London Tigers swept the Pekin Panthers in SEISC crossover games. The New London baseball team won 4-2 and the softball team picked up an 8-5 victory.
The Tiger baseball team scored one run each in the second and third innings before Pekin tied the game up with a two-run fifth. The Tigers put up two runs in the bottom of the sixth and hung on for the victory.
New London's Tucker Gibbar went 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the team. Jaxon Allen and Holvin Catala each knocked in one run as well. Seth Bailey threw five and two-thirds innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits and three walks. Kooper Schulte picked up the win in relief, throwing one and one-third shutout innings.
The Pekin softball team held a 2-0 lead after one inning, a 4-2 advantage after two, and a 5-2 lead after three. New London came back with two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to pull off the comeback.
W-MU swept by Louisa-Muscatine
he Winfield-Mt. Union softball team played the No. 2 team in Class 3A to a one-run game, falling 1-0 in their season opener. The baseball team fell 12-2.
W-MU starting pitcher Madie Anderson was dealing for the softball team, giving up just one earned run on seven full innings, and striking out nine batters. L & M scored their lone run in the fourth inning. W-MU was only able to get one hit off L & M ace Hailey Sanders. Carlee Sloan went 1-3 with a single.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the W-MU baseball team tied it up with two runs in the top of the second inning. L & M put up five runs in the bottom of the second and five more in the bottom of the fourth, and the Wolves' bats went cold, allowing the Falcons to win in five frames.
Jacob Ford went 2-3 with a stolen base in the loss. Christian Gerot was 1-2 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Ford gave up seven runs (one earned) over his two innings of work on the mound, and Collin Simmons gave up five runs (four earned) in two innings pitched of his own.
Cardinal softball creams Crusaders
The Cardinal softball team ran through Holy Trinity in their season opener. After the Crusaders scored the first run of the game in the top of the first, Cardinal answered with four in the first, two in the fourth and five more in the fifth to win the game in five innings.
Rachel Lewman had a huge game, going 4-4 with a double and four RBIs. Ava Ferrell went 3-4 with three RBIs. Maddie Cloke was 1-3 with two RBIs, and both Riley Bears and Kinsey Hissem knocked in one run.
Ferrell threw a two-hitter in the circle. She gave up just one unearned run over her five innings of work and struck out four Holy Trinity batters.
Columbus sinks
The Wildcats lost a softball game 5-1 to Lone Tree,
Columbus had three hits, two walks and nine strike outs. The Wildcats scored when Jobie Lekwa got walked, stole second and scored on a base hit by Michelle Diaz.
Libby White pitched four innings giving up four hits, a walk, a HB, and had three strike outs and gave up a run. Emma Milder pitched three innings with one strike out, two hits, a walk and gave up a home run to Arlie Lorack.
'Both pitchers pitched well,” Columbus coach Katie Coil said. 'Our defense needed to be a little more solid, but we played well.”
In baseball, Columbus lost by a 17-2 score.
Keota wins 1, loses 1
The Eagles scored a South Iowa Cedar League baseball win over North Mahaska 9-6 but the softball team lost 13-0.
Colten Clarahan went 2-for-4 with three RBI and struck out all six batters he faced.
Mid-Prairie splits
In River Valley Conference action, the 10th-ranked (Class 2A) Golden Hawks scored a 10-0 baseball road win over Northeast as Aidan Rath went 2-for-3 with a double. Brad Tornow pitched all five innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out 13.
Mid-Prairie's softball team lost 11-0 as Rylee Vercande had the only Hawks hit.
