Valdez goes for 30 in Wildcats’ win

Eric Valdez carried Columbus to a high school boys basketball win Friday in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference Shootout.
Columbus 59, Cardinal 45
Valdez scored 30 points in the home win with five assists and four rebounds. He went 10 of 20 from the field and 7 of 10 at the foul line. Mason Hodges had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The game was tied at 25 at halftime, but the Wildcats outscored the visitors 22-5 in the third period.
Highland 71, West Burlington 63
Zack Lasek poured in 30 points to defeat the vistors.
Danville 64, Iowa Mennonite 63
Trevor Leyden paced IMS with 19 points and Eli Ours added 13 in the last-second loss.
WACO 51, Wapello 37
Nik Coble's 15 points sparked the visitors to the win.
Albia 91, Keota 70
The Eagles lost the nonconference home game despite 29 points from JD Stout, who was 9 of 12 from the field, including 5 of 8 on threes and 6 of 6 at the foul line. Luke Hammen added 12 points and Carson Sprouse went for 16 off the bench.
West Branch 74, Mid-Prairie 62
The visitors took an 17-8 lead in the first quarter of the River Valley Conference game.
Tom Butters was 9 of 13 from the field on his way to 22 points and 14 rebounds. Mid-Prairie teammate Ethan Trimpe was 9 of 14 from the field for 19 points.
Highland 38, Winfield-Mt. Union 24
Aly Stokes led the North Division girls win with 20 points at Winfield. Highland is 13-7. Highland also got a win Saturday, 59-30, against Columbus.
West Branch 49, Mid-Prairie 40
Shae Becker scored 11 in the RVC loss. The home team led 23-21 at halftime and 40-30 after the third quarter.
Iowa Mennonite 81, HLV 43
Suzanna Yoder led IMS with 35 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Rubye Ney recorded a double-double with 15 points, 15 rebounds and four steals. Yani Gutierrez added seven points, dished out six assists, five steals and pulled in five rebounds. Ava Hughes added her first varsity bucket.
Keota 49, Albia 26
Addison Sprouse had 18 and Paige Thompson 14 in the non-conference win.
No. 11 Central Lee 65, WACO 43
The Class 3A-ranked home team won the South Division game Saturday.
WACO's Kristen Conley had 13 points.
