ALBIA — Van Buren County’s football team traveled to Albia Friday for a scrimmage.
“Overall, the night was a success because we were able to see our guys hit people other than our own team and walked out with everyone healthy,” Van Buren head coach Brian Johnson said. “We are really glad Albia agreed to work with us, and I think it was great for both teams.”
The first real contact for football teams is a mixed bag of good and bad.
“It wasn't great at some points and far from perfect but definitely a step in the right direction for the program,” Johnson said. “Both offense and defense started out a little rough I really think a lot of it was nervous and guys being in new spots, but after a couple series they settled in, and our offense looked good, and we moved the ball well. Same on D we gave a few big plays right away but then settled down and things got better.
The score was not registered, and there were no special teams plays. Johnson couldn’t say for sure how many touchdowns were scored. Coaches will review film of the scrimmage, and that will reveal much more.
Johnson said the biggest surprise was no fumbles on offense because “that's something we have had issues with in the past early in the season.”
An ongoing message from coach to players, from Johnson to Warriors has been it's hard to win with 11 individuals but it's easier when those 11 play as a unit and fight for each other.
“This is something we have been preaching since I took over a couple years ago. And the guys really played well as a team.”
Johnson said the night was a “good start, but we still have a lot of work to do before Friday.”
The Warriors will be on the road to open the season, playing at Central Lee.
