WAYLAND — Van Buren County came out of the gates on fire on Monday night, as the Warriors in orange visited the home of the Warriors in blue, at the 2025 WACO volleyball tournament.
Two pools of four battled it out on the courts at WACO High School. One of those pools included Union area teams VBC, Pekin and WACO, along with Centerville. VBC was untouched by all three foes.
Coach Selena Sayre’s Warriors took down Pekin in the opener, beating the Panthers 21-9 and 21-9. VBC knocked off Centerville to move to 2-0 on the day, and then battled past WACO, winning 21-11 and 21-16.
VBC accounted for three of the Union area’s four wins at the tournament. The only other victory was Pekin’s, as the Panthers escaped WACO 21-16 and 21-18.
Pekin nearly had a second win, but faltered late against Centerville. The Panthers won the first set 21-15, before falling 21-17 in the second and 15-6 in the third.
WACO’s only other match of the night was the opener against Centerville. The Redettes swept the Warriors 21-16 and 21-17.
Columbus went 0-3 as well in the other pool, but had some tough battles along the way.
The Wildcats came out on top in a tight first set against Louisa-Muscatine, winning 21-19. L&M, however, was able to rally to win 21-17 in the second and 15-13 in the third.
After dropping the opening set 21-16 against Sigourney, Columbus fought back to win 23-21 in the second. The Savages clipped the Wildcats 15-8 in the third game.
Columbus then showed down with eventual pool-winner Notre Dame. The Nikes had to sweat in the first set, beating Columbus 21-18, but Notre Dame turned it on in the second to finish off the sweep, winning 21-10.
