KEOSAUQUA - The No. 4 (1A) Van Buren County girls battled undefeated and No. 4 (2A) Notre Dame all the way to the wire on Friday night, but the Nikes had the last laugh. Notre Dame knocked the Warriors off 43-39 to take over first place in the SEISC South Division. The Nike boys followed that by defeating Van Buren 56-43.
After one half of play, Van Buren held a 23-20 lead. Two of the top players in the game, Van Buren's Taryn Scheuermann and Notre Dame's Gabby Deery found themselves with three fouls apiece, setting the stage for a crazy second half.
The Warriors clung on to a one-point lead after three quarters, at 29-28.
Notre Dame was able to grab the lead in the fourth quarter and hanging on, handing Van Buren their first loss in conference play.
Despite the loss, Isabel Manning finished the day with 18 points. Scheuermann finished the game with 13 point snad eight rebounds.
The boys team led early on but couldn't hang on against a tough Nike team. The Warriors had three double-digit scorers in their loss. Jackson Manning and Lane Davis scored 14 points apiece and Tony Davidson had 11.
