Small-school football matchups in week two will bring a wide variety of football styles into the fold, as Cardinal will deal with a two-headed monster of a rushing attack, Pekin will need to contain a dual-threat quarterback and Van Buren will face off with a dynamic receiver and quarterback combination that still wasn?t able to secure a week one victory. Here are the three other area schools? matchups for week 2:
Cardinal (1-0) vs. Southeast Warren, Liberty Center (1-0)
The Comets return to Eldon for their first home opener under new head coach Nick Ehret with higher expectations after a week one victory over Van Buren. But, Cardinal will need to prepare for running back Alex Hommer, who churned out 271 yards and three touchdowns in the Warhawks? week one home win against Grand View Christian. Behind Hommer is running back Nate Jimenez, who carried the ball 23 times for 158 yards in the victory as well. Can Cardinal contain that dynamic rushing offense and claim their first home victory of 2016? It?ll be Comets versus Warhawks at 7 p.m.
Pekin (0-1) at Davis County (1-0)
Brent Blakely?s debut as a head coach wasn?t quite what he would have liked, with the Panthers falling 42-20 to Sigourney-Keota. But, Pekin will have a slightly easier matchup in the second week of the season, despite opening their road schedule. Davis County edged out Fort Madison 27-20 in the first week behind quarterback Zach Houf, who threw for two touchdowns and added another score in the rushing game. If Pekin can contain Houf and force him into some trouble early on, the Panthers will have a good chance at victory and pulling themselves back to .500 in the early goings of the season.
Van Buren (0-1) at New London (0-1)
The Warriors struggled in their season opener in getting shut out by Cardinal, while the Tigers were beat 25-13 in Wapello to start their season. Both teams will come into Friday night optimistic for their first victory. Van Buren will need to contain sophomore receiver Keontae Lockett, who caught six passes for 153 yards in a touchdown in that week one loss to the Indians. If Lockett gets free into open space, he?ll cause quite the headache for the Van Buren faithful, as the team searches for its first win of the year on the road.
