Sigourney-Keota continued its late-season surge in district play Friday night. The Cobras are still below .500 on the season but improved to 3-1 in Class 1A District 6 with blowout victory over Durant.
Here’s a look at how other Union Area small schools fared Friday night.
Sigourney-Keota 44, Durant 14
Ike Molyneux was once again the star for the Cobras. The junior racked up 225 yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries. Brayden Wood also connected with Ayden Galindo for a touchdown through the air. Carson O'Rourke had an intercetpion and a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
The Cobras won’t catch first place Regina Catholic, and its only district loss was a 41-7 defeat to the Regals. However, Friday’s win did see Sigourney-Keota clinch second play in 1A-6, and it has a chance to finish 4-1 in district play with a win in its final regular season game.
Van Buren County 45, Wapello 32
A week off did the trick for Van Buren County, and the Warriors were able to end the regular season on a win. They defeated on homecoming and senior night for VBC.
Quarterback Will Cocherell completed 6 of 15 passes for 225 yards, four touchdown with one interception. Sophomore Jace Duncan hauled in three touchdown grabs, including a 90 yard score. VBC completed a balanced offensive performance with 249 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, including two scores by Aden Debner.
VBC’s final scheduled regular season game was set to be a road clash against New London. The Warriors will get a 17-0 forfeit victory due to the Tigers canceling their season.
Cardinal 26, Louisa-Muscatine 14
The Comets earned their first win of the season Friday night with a road victory over the Falcons. Cardinal outscored Louisa-Muscatine 20-6 in the final two quarters to secure the victory.
Alijah Frase went 6 of 17 for 52 yards and a touchdown through the air. He was even more impactful on the ground with 10 carries for 100 yards and two scores. Logan Shultz also found the end zone and Zach Luedtke led the Comets with 148 yards on 12 carries.
Cardinal will finish the season at home against Sigourney-Keota. It will be Senior Night for the Comets.
Springville 52, WACO 33
The Warriors dropped their fourth game in a row with a home defeat to Springville. WACO stabilized in the second quarter after going down 10-0 hole, but a 21-6 fourth quarter for the Orioles allowed them to pull away.
WACO finishes the season with a tough road test against No. 4 Iowa Valley. An upset win would go along way for the Warriors playoff hopes, as they currently sit tied for third place in Class 8 player District 5 alongside Winfield-Mt Union.
