VBC softball goes 2-1 over weekend

The Van Buren County softball team picked up two wins over Mediapolis this weekend, a 12-2 game on the road on Friday night and a 12-0 victory in West Liberty on Saturday. The Warriors also took a loss in West Liberty, falling to the hosting Comets 8-1.
In Mediapolis, the two teams traded runs over the first couple of innings. The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning and 2-2 after the second. The Warriors rattled off the final 10 runs of the game, however, scoring two in the third, three in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Annabell Cormier led the squad at the plate on Friday night, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Lexi Jirak went 2-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Chelsey Huff was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Ella Jirak, Ally Cambell, Brooklynn Cormier and Cala Smith each had an RBI as well.
Huff through a complete game on Friday night. She gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks, while striking out 10 batters over her seven innings of work.
The Warriors stayed hot the next morning when they beat up on the same Mediapolis squad. Van Buren scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second and three each in the third and fourth to win the game in four innings.
Cambell had a big day at the plate and in the circle in the Warriors' second game against Mediapolis. She went 3-3 with two doubles and an RBI at the plate, and threw a two-hit shutout in the circle, striking two Bullette batters out in the process.
Isabel Manning was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs in the win. L. Jirak was 2-3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs, and Chelsey Huff went 2-3 with two RBIs.
The Warriors didn't have such luck in their second game on Saturday. West Liberty scored eight runs in the first two innings, and Van Buren's only run came in the sixth. L. Jirak was 3-3 with an RBI in the loss, and Huff gave up eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits and one walk, while striking out nine batters over six innings.
