KEOSAUQUA - Van Buren County football fans went home happy after a successful showing in the Warriors' season opener against Central Lee. The Warriors ran for 382 yards and six touchdowns in a 40-21 home win.
Central Lee led the game 7-6 after the first quarter but the Warriors would score 28 points over the next two quarters. VBC took a 22-15 lead into halftime and a 35-15 lead into the final period.
Sam Warth and Cohyn Jury combined for a monster game on the ground. Warth went for 140 yards and three touchdowns and Jury ran for 139 yards and two. Wyatt Mertens added 60 yards and a touchdown of his own as the Warriors ran through the Hawks' defense all night.
Quarterback Lane Davis only had to throw three passes all night. He completed one of those, a 35-yard strike to Anthony Dunkin. Davis also picked up 33 yards on the ground.
The Warrior defense created three turnovers on the night. Worth had a huge game, leading the team with six solo tackles and also picking off one pass and causing a fumble on a sack. Davis and Mertens also picked off one pass apiece.
'It has been really fun coaching this group of guys that come to practice every day asking questions and wanting to learn,” said VBC head coach Brian Johnson. 'They are willing to do the extra stuff, and that makes a huge difference.”
The Warriors are 1-0 for the firs time since the 2017-18 season. VBC will attempt to win its second-straight home game this week when they welcome in Mediapolis.
