VBC, WMU make SEISC finals
Warriors, Wolves advance past pool play, knocked out in quarterfinal round

BURLINGTON — The Southeast Iowa Super Conference tournament finals were on Saturday in Burlington, and two area teams were in attendance. Both Van Buren County and Winfield-Mount Union moved past Thursday’s pool play round, but both were eliminated in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
On Thursday, Van Buren County entered ‘Pool 3’ in Columbus as the No. 6 seed. The Warriors went 2-1.
The Warriors beat Columbus 21-12, 21-14. Van Buren County knocked off Hillcrest Academy 21-10, 21-17.
Due to a 21-14, 22-20 loss to Notre Dame in their other pool play game, the Warriors had to play against Pool 4 winner Central Lee. The Hawks knocked out the Warriors after two nail-biting sets went Central Lee’s way, 25-23 and 26-24.
Winfield-Mount Union finished second at ‘Pool 1’ in Danville. The Wolves beat hosting Danville 21-16, 21-19, behind a seven-kill performance from Kellee Milks. WMU took out Lone Tree 21-17, 21-5, getting three kills from Audrie Gipple.
WMU did fall to Holy Trinity in its other pool play match, which forced the Wolves to play ‘Pool 2’ winner West Burlington. WMU fell 25-9, 25-9 against the Falcons to end their run in the quarterfinals.
No other Union area teams finished Top-2 in their pools. Highland did pick up a 21-9, 21-9 win against Pekin in Pool 2. Columbus had a thrilling three-set win over Hillcrest (21-11, 24-26, 15-10) in Pool 3.
In Pool 4, New London did have three wins. The Tigers took down Central Lee (18-21, 21-19, 15-8), WACO (25-23, 17-21, 15-8) and Louisa-Muscatine (21-11, 21-16).
New London wound up in a three-way tiebreaker with Central Lee and New London. The Hawks took down the Tigers 21-17, and then beat Wapello 21-18 to earn the top spot.
WACO had one win in pool play, beating Louisa-Muscatine 21-11, 21-13.
In the final match of the tournament, West Burlington swept Holy Trinity 25-19, 25-18.
