Volleyball pairings released

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union volleyball postseason brackets have been drawn and teams now know who is in the way of a trip to the state tournament in 2021.

The playoffs start Oct. 18 for the three smallest classes, Oct. 19 for Class 4A.

Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant will face each other in the first round of Class 4A, while Washington is in 3A. The Demons travel to fourth-ranked West Liberty and the winner of that match will face the winner of Mid-Prairie and Tipton. The Golden Hawks will host Tipton in the quarterfinals.

Other Union schools meeting in the first postseason match are Keota at WACO and Highland at Winfield-Mount Union in Class 1A, with Cardinal at Van Buren County in 2A. The Comets versus Van Burne County winner plays at Mediapolis. Pekin opens at Danville while Columbus goes to Durant.

In 1A, Hillcrest is in Region 6 and plays at HLV. WMU and Highland winner will play at Wapello in Region 7.

In 1A Region 8, No. 12 New London (Moravia) and WACO host matches with the winners playing each other and that winner likely plays at No. 5 Holy Trinity.

The state volleyball tournament will be played Nov. 1-4 at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse in Cedar Rapids.
