Volleyball roundup: Mid-Prairie, WMU, WACO advance

Union area postseason volleyball continued on Wednesday night. The area squads had an all-around nice showing as two move on their regional semifinals and one will play for the regional championship. Two had their seasons ended as well.
Mid-Prairie 3, Davis County 0
Mid-Prairie advances to the Class 3A Region 8 Championship with the sweep of Davis County.
The Golden Hawks and Mustangs were neck and neck to start their semifinal matchup, but Mid-Prairie pulled it together late to move on. They took the victory 28-26, 25-14 and 25-20.
Paige Safly and Ella Groenewold led Mid-Prairie in kills with nine each. Landry Pacha and Jovi Evans each had eight as well.
Pacha also racked up a team-high 20 assists in the win and Evans followed with 17. Dakota Mitchell led in digs with 17.
Mid-Prairie (27-11) will take on Davenport Assumption (29-7) for the regional title next Tuesday at Assumption High School.
WACO 3, Melcher-Dallas 0
The Warriors had no problem against the Saints in the two’s Class 1A Region 8 quarterfinal bout on Wednesday.
WACO advances to the semifinals with a sweep, 25-11, 25-8, 25-8, over Melcher-Dallas.
Ellah Kissell led with nine kills on the night, followed by Emma Wagler with six.
Grace Coble was the top assist getter with 22 on the night. Kissell finished with 11 digs and Jocelyn Fulton had 10.
WACO (27-6) will take on Holy Trinity Catholic (27-15) in the regional semifinals on Monday at Holy Trinity.
Winfield-Mt. Union 3, Wapello 0
Winfield-Mt. Union’s playoff journey continues as the Wolves down Wapello in three straight sets.
It was a tight battle throughout, but WMU prevailed 25-20, 25-15 and 25-20.
Bradie Buffington had a team-high 13 kills for the Wolves and Melina Oepping followed with 8.
Keely Malone was WMU’s top passer on the night, finished with 23 assists. Keetyn Townsley led defensively with 17 digs.
Winfield-Mt. Union (24-9) will face off with Burlington Notre Dame (30-13) in the Class 1A Region 8 Semifinals on Monday at Notre Dame High School.
Central City 3, Highland 1
Highland played great out of the gates in their Class 1A Region 7 quarterfinal match, but the Wildcats stormed back with three straight to end Highlands season.
The Huskies won the first, 25-21, but lost the next three, 25-13, 25-12, 25-15.
Offensively, Sarah Burton had 10 kills for Highland, followed by Adelynn Kleopfer with seven.
MyLei Smith finished with 17 assists for Highland and Burton led in digs with 22.
The Huskies end their season with a 13-15 overall record.
West Burlington 3, Van Buren County 0
Van Buren had a tough go with the touted Falcons on Wednesday night in the two’s Class 2A regional quarterfinal match.
The Warriors fell in the quarterfinal matchup, 25-13, 25-8 and 25-9. For Van Buren the loss marks the end of its season.
Van Buren County finishes with a 11-17 record on the year.
