WACO wins the English Valleys Tournament
WACO had itself a winning Saturday as the Warriors won four straight matches on their way to a tournament victory at English Valleys.
The Warriors swept Hillcrest Academy 21-15, 21-18; Tri-County 21-10 in two sets; Sigourney in three sets, 21-23, 21-18, 15-4; and Southeast Iowa Super Conference foe Winfield-Mt. Union 25-20, 25-19.
Winfield-Mt. Union goes 3-1 in English Valleys Tournament
Winfield-Mt. Union had a great showing over the weekend at English Valleys.
The Wolves picked up a trio of wins on Saturday, only dropping two sets in the entire tournament.
WMU swept the likes of East Marshall 21-14, 21-8; Cardinal 21-13, 21-11 and English Valleys 21-19, 21-17.
Their lone loss came from the hands of fellow Southeast Iowa Super Conference North rival WACO, a 20-25, 19-25 defeat.
Cardinal finishes 1-2 at English Valleys Tournament
The Comets of Cardinal played in some close matches on Saturday at the English Valleys Varsity Volleyball Tournament.
The Comets finished the tournament with one win and a pair of defeats.
Cardinal’s lone victory came against Tri-County, a 2-0 win. The Comets edged the Trojans 21-19 before dominating the final sec 21-8.
The two losses came from East Marshall and Winfield-Mt. Union.
Cardinal came up short to the Mustangs after a nail-biting third set, 17-21, 22-20,15-17.
WMU topped Cardinal with a pair of set wins, 21-13 and 21-11.
Hillcrest Academy falls to WACO, picks up two wins at English Valleys
Hillcrest Academy had a busy end of the week.
The Ravens took on Southeast Iowa Super Conference North rival WACO on Thursday and competed in the English Valleys tournament on Saturday.
Hillcrest fell to WACO in straight sets on Thursday, 12-25, 15-25 and 21-25.
On Saturday, the Ravens grabbed a pair of wins and two losses.
Hillcrest defeated Tri-County 2-1, 21-10, 15-21 and 15-12. The Ravens then topped Sigourney 2-1, 15-21, 21-18 and 15-11.
Their pair of losses came from WACO, 15-21, 18-21 and English Valleys, 18-21, 17-21.
New London loses five at Notre Dame Invitational
New London faced tough competition on Saturday afternoon at the Notre Dame Invitational.
The Tigers lost five straight matches but grabbed at least one set victory in three of the five.
New London was defeated by Danville, West Burlington 11-21, 6-21; Wapello 10-21, 18-21; Keokuk 18-21, 27-25, 9-15 and Notre Dame 13-21, 21-15, 10-15.
Wapello 3-0 over Columbus
Columbus had a tough go against Southeast Iowa Super Conference foe Wapello on Thursday night.
The Wildcats were downed in three straight sets by the Arrows, 25-12 and 25-16 in both the second and third.
Lily Coil led the Wildcats with eight kills and Kennedy Woepking finished with six.
Daniela Diaz ended with 16 assists in the loss.
Coil led Columbus in digs with 13, while Jocelyn Hernandez had 12.
Mid-Prairie falls 3-2 in fifth set final to West Branch
Mid-Prairie and West Branch went down to the wire on Thursday.
A fifth set was needed to decide a winner and it was the Bears just edging the Golden Hawks.
Mid-Prairie won the opening set, 25-19, but the two traded the next pair 20-25, 25-16 and then West Branch took the fourth and fifth 26-28, 13-15.
Callie Huber ended with a team-high 17 kills in the loss.
Jovi Evans finished with 28 assists as well as a team-best 23 digs.
