W-MU baseball falls in first two games

WINFIELD - The Winfield-Mt. Union baseball team dropped two games to begin their season. The Wolves fell 8-2 at Pekin on Thursday and then dropped a 15-3 game against Cardinal at home on Friday.
W-MU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first against Pekin. The Panthers came back with three in the second inning, but W-MU put up one more in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2. Pekin added five more runs in the final innings to run away with a six-run win.
Christian Gerot went 2-2 with a run scored in the loss. Nick Crow went 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Jacob Ford was 1-3 with an RBI.
Dawson Bergthold picked up the loss on the mound. He threw four innings and gave up five runs (four earned). He gave up six hits and two walks, while striking out two.
Cardinal scored two runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead on Friday. W-U scored three in the second, two of which came from a two-RBI hit from Gerot. Cardinal tacked on five in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in thse sixth.
Gerot's hit was the only one of the day for W-MU. He finished the game 1-2 with two RBIs. Nathan Crow, Nick Davis and Noah Sparrow each scored a run.
