WINFIELD - It was a rough night for the Winfield-Mt. Union baseball team on Monday night. The Wolves hosted a tough Highland team in SEISC North Division action, falling 17-0 in five innings.
Highland pitcher Chase Schultz threw a perfect game, striking out 12 Wolves along the way.
W-MU starter Jacob Ford kept the Huskies' offense quiet through one inning, getting some assistance from center fielder Christian Gerot, who made a catch in center field and doubled off a runner at second to get the Wolves out of an early jam. In the second frame, however, things started to spiral out of control.
Highland loaded the bases one out and scored their first run when Brady Hahn got plunked by a pitch. The Huskies scored 13 points in the second inning to take a 13-0 lead.
Highland added one run in the third and three in the fifth to take a 17-0 advantage. That ended the game early via the 10-run mercy rule.
Five different players threw for W-MU in the loss. Ford gave up eight runs (seven earned) over 1.33 innings, allowing one hit and three walks. He also hit four batters and struck out one.
Dawson Bergthold, John Day and Nick Crow were all used in the 13-run second inning. Crow eventually got out of the jam. Noah Sparrow threw three innings in relief and gave up four runs (one earned) on three hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, while striking out two.
The Wolves are now 0-3 to start the season. They'll be on the road tonight (Tuesday) in Kalona, when they take on Iowa Mennonite.
