W-MU girls fall at home

WINFIELD - The Winfield-Mt. Union girls' basketball team was baptized by fire on Tuesday night. The Wolves opened their season against Mediapolis, the 14th-ranked team in Class 2A.
The Wolves didn't back down against their ranked foe, and trailed by less than 10 at halftime, but Mediapolis pulled away in the second half to win the opener 63-38.
Mediapolis led 16-7 after the first quarter, but the two teams split the second quarter 15-15. At the break, the Bullettes held a 31-23 advantage.
Mediapolis began to pull away in the third quarter, winning the period 14-7. The Bullettes took the fourth quarter 18-9, their highest scoring period of the game.
Jenna Buffington led W-MU in the loss, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds for a double-double. She also led the team with three blocked shots.
Freshman Jobey Malone scored eight points in her first high school game. Liana Sweezer finished the night with seven. Kyndal Townsley had six points. Jami Wilkerson had three points, nine rebounds and three steals, and Ali Cockerham scored two. Kayla Edwards didn't find the scoreboard, but she did lead the team with three assists.
W-MU will be back in action this Saturday, Nov. 24, when they host Van Buren.
