W-MU softball outlasted in marathon

WINFIELD - The Winfield-Mt. Union and Wapello softball teams played 12 innings on Thursday night before a winner was finally crowned. The Arrows forced extra innings with two runs in the top of the seventh, and scored the eventual game-winner in the third, to take down W-MU 3-2.
W-MU put up the first two runs of the game, scoring a pair on an RBI single by Emma Haines in the fourth inning. There wasn't another run scoed in the game until Wapello's two-run seventh.
The Arrows and Wolves went five extra innings without a run crossing the plte, but Wapello finally broke through in the top of the 12th to take a 3-2 lead. W-MU couldn't tie the game up in the bottom half of the inning, and Wapello escaped with a 3-2 victory.
In 12 innings, the two teams had just 11 total hits. Six of those went to Wapello and five were off the bats of W-MU.
Haines went 2-5 with two RBIs to lead the team. Liana Sweezer was 1-5 with a double and a run scored. Kyndal Townsley and Carlee Sloan each had one hit, and Thea Urias scored one run.
Madie Anderson threw 252 pitches in the loss. She gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and four walks, while striking out 14 Arrows.
The Wolves are now 10-5 overall this season. They'll host Pekin tonight (Thursday) in another SEISC North Division game.
