W-MU softball takes out New London on the road

NEW LONDON - Winfield-Mt. Union took the softball portion of the Henry County showdown between the Wolves and New London on Thursday night. The Wolves beat the Tigers 13-3.
W-MU started the game out with a bang, putting up four runs in the first inning. W-MU tacked on two in the third, although New London did get three back on a three-run home run by Kara Krieger in the bottom half of the inning. Still, the Wolves led 6-3 after three innings.
The Wolves scored six runs in the fifth inning. W-MU added another in the seventh to win by 10.
W-MU was led by Molly Miller, who went 3-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Madie Anderson went 2-4 with two RBIs. Jobey Malone went 2-4 with an RBI. Keetyn Towsnley and Carlee Sloan went 2-5 with an RBI, and Anna Anderson was 1-5 with an RBI.
Madie threw a complete game seven innings to earn the win. She gave up three earned runs on three hits and one walk, while strking out nine Tigers.
Krieger went 1-3 with three RBIs to lead the Tigers. Layney Loyd and Kaylor Schulte each scored in the loss.
Chloe Heitmeier was in the circle again for New London. She gave up 13 runs (nine earned) with 14 hits and two walks, while striking out two.
New London had one more game to close out the regular season, topping BGM 5-0 on Friday night. Ashlyn McSorley was 1-3 with two RBIs in that game. Sofie Reighard was 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Loyd went 2-4 with a double and an RBI, and Krieger went 1-3 with an RBI.
In the win against BGM, Heitmeier threw a shutout, giving up five hits and one walk, while striking out four.
W-MU finished the regular season 16-8. New London went 9-13.
The two teams will open their postseason in the Class 1A Region 5 tournament tonight (Monday). The Wolves will host Tri-County, and the Tigers will host Hartwick-Ladora-Victor. Both games will begin at 7 p.m. If W-MU wins, they'll host either BGM or Iowa Mennonite on Wednesday, July 10. If the Tigers win, they'll head to North Mahaska for their next game, also on Wednesday.
