WACO advances, WMU falls short in playoff opening round
Warriors top Central City for second time, Wolves narrow gap in second loss to Montezuma

Two of the premier Southeast Iowa 8-Player programs kicked off their postseason run on Friday night - those two teams being the Warriors of WACO and the Wolves of Winfield-Mt. Union.
It was a tale of two endings between the pair as one will play for a shot at the state quarterfinals, while the other ends it season.
Both squads faced a familiar opponent in their first round matchups, with WACO taking on Central City and Winfield-Mt. Union squaring off with Montezuma.
The results played out the same as the previous meetings.
WACO (8-1) was able to down Central City (6-4) 39-16 to move on, while Winfield-Mt. Union (5-4) came up just short 61-54 to Montezuma (9-1).
WACO took control early and never looked back against the Wildcats despite it being close through one half.
The Warriors held onto a 15-8 lead at the break, but went on to outscore the Wildcats 21-8 in the third quarter to pull away.
Louden Huisenga ran for 146 yards and one touchdown in the win. Trey Edeker finished with 97 yards and three touchdowns as well.
Clayton Miller threw for 81 yards and a touchdown. Isaac Rich caught two passes for 82 yards and a score.
Defensively, Miller finished with 13.5 tackles and two interceptions.
The Warriors will now take on Don Bosco (9-0) in the second round on the road.
As for WMU, the Wolves fell behind 14-0 after one quarter.
However, a 26-14 second frame by the Wolves got them right back in it at the half, trailing just 28-26.
Montezuma stayed just a hair ahead.
The Braves outscored the Wolves 27-20 in the third to make it 55-46 heading into the fourth.
Despite edging the Braves 8-6 in the final quarter, it wasn’t quite enough.
Jake Edwards threw for an outstanding 327 yards and five touchdowns in the loss. He added 50 yards on the ground with one score.
Lane Genkinger had a touchdown as well. He also ended with 127 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Max Edwards tallied 92 yards and one score. Tayson Samuels ended with 72 yards and one touchdown as well.
Defensively, Genkinger finished with 15 tackles, while Jake Edwards had 14. Keaton Starkweather recovered a fumble as well.
