WACO basketball splits with Wapello

The WACO boys? and girls? basketball teams split a pair of games with visiting Wapello on Tuesday night. The boys? team won by a score of 47-41 in its season opener, and the girls lost by a narrow final of 36-32.
In the boys? game, the first quarter was a battle, with Wapello taking a one-point lead into the second quarter, 8-7. However, the Warriors went on a 17-7 run to go up 25-15 at halftime, and they never looked back, holding on to the advantage from there on out.
Aaron Barnhart led all scorers with 16 points, one of three WACO playres to score in double figures. Dylan Carlson added 12 points for WACO and Klinton Garrett had 10 points.
In the girls? game, the Warriors went down early, falling behind 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.
They worked their way back and cut the Arrows? lead to two points by halftime, 18-16, and then took a three-point lead by the end of the third qurater, 29-26.
But in the final four minutes of the game, the Warriors started to slip. Wapello took a lead at 35-32 with two minutes to play and held on for the victory.
Hannah Black was the high scorer for WACO with 10 points. Jaelyn Unternahrer scored eight points and Jalyssa Jepson added seven.
The WACO girls are now 0-3 on the season and in the SEISC North. Next up for WACO is a trip to nearby Winfield-Mt. Union on Friday.
