WINFIELD — It was rivalry night in Winfield on Saturday, as the WACO Warriors came across Highway 218 to face the Wolves in SoutheastW Iowa Super Conference North Division doubleheader.
WACO did what it needed to do, beating the Wolves in both games. The Warrior girls held off a late WMU rush to escape 46-45, and the WACO boys stayed undefeated in conference play, winning 51-42.
In the girls’ game, WMU had been down all night long, as WACO took a 27-19 lead into a halftime and held a 38-34 advantage after three quarters.
WMU was down as much as eight points in the fourth, but came back to cut the lead to a single point when Madison Kellogg hit a runner with less than 10 seconds to go.
Unfortunately for the Wolves, they didn’t have enough time to foul WACO enough to get the Warriors on the line, and WACO crawled out with a one-point win.
The win came one night after a huge victory for the Warriors at home. WACO defeated first-place Columbus 58-57 in the first game back from break, capitalizing on a 26-point night from Ella Huisenga.
Despite the loss, WMU did get a huge game out of Kynlee Buffington, who finished with 23 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
The WACO boys led 17-12 after one quarter, 33-22 at halftime and 43-28 after three. WMU came back to make it a game down the stretch, but the Warriors secured the win to move to a perfect 7-0 in conference play.
Christian Stacy scored 19 points to lead WACO in the win. Holden Hughes had 15 points, and Clayton Miller finished with eight points and 13 rebounds.
Jake Edwards led WMU with 13 points. Nicholas Sparrow had 11 points, and Cooper Buffington flirted with a double-double, going for nine points and eight rebounds.
