WEST BURLINGTON — WACO basketball came up with the short end of the stick in Saturday’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference’s Tournament finals matchup with Notre Dame.
The bout, which featured the No. 2 seeds in the SEISC North and South division, ended with Notre Dame on top 65-52.
Notre Dame held the advantage early, as it jumped out to leads of 6-0 and 14-5. WACO continued to battle. The Warriors closed the first period well, ending with an 8-2 run that included a buzzer beating mid range jumper from Christian Stacy.
Heading into the second quarter, the Notre Dame lead sat at 16-13.
Notre Dame made it tough on WACO through the second quarter though. The Warriors were held to just nine points, while the Nikes scored 22 to push their lead to 40-22.
Out of the break, the Warriors slowly chipped away. A pair of free throws with just 2.5 seconds left by Isaac Rich helped the Warriors make it a 16 point game heading into the final period.
WACO continued that pace through the fourth, getting it all the way down to a 12 point game, 58-46, after back-to-back buckets from Casey Coakley and Isaac Egli.
However, time was not on the Warriors side with just over two minutes to play as the Nikes hit five from the stripe down the stretch.
Christian Stacy led WACO with 18 points in the loss.
