The WACO football team did everything it needed to do to hold on to its No. 2 ranking in this week’s Cedar Rapids Gazette high school football poll, but the Warriors were still jumped in the rankings.
Don Bosco impressed pollsters enough in an 85-8 victory against winless Garwin GMG to scoot past WACO for the second spot in Class 8-Player. The Warriors defeated Lone Tree 42-17.
WACO may not be the only Union area ranked team for very long. Both Columbus and Sigourney-Keota are rising in the ranks of their respective classes, and both teams are just outside of the Top-10.
Unbeaten Columbus received five votes in the Class A poll after a 71-14 crushing of North Mahaska. The Wildcats are the second team out of the Top 10 in Class A, and they are scheduled to play current No. 10 Alburnett in two weeks.
One week after taking out the No. 1 team in Class 1A, Sigourney-Keota topped Cardinal 56-3. The Cobras received three votes in the poll, one away from a pair of No. 10s.
Overall, The Gazette poll has just two unanimous number one teams. Council Bluffs Lewis Central was voted No. 1 in Class 4A, and Remsen St. Mary’s held the top spot in Class 8-Player.
