WACO girls’ defense difference in overtime

WAYLAND - WACO simply had more in the gas tank than the visiting Danville Bears on Tuesday. After going into overtime of the girls basketball game tied at 41-41, WACO outscored Danville 8-0 in the extra period to earn a 49-41 overtime victory.
WACO had an 18-11 halftime lead, but didn't score again until the end of the first quarter. Danville put up 15-straight points to take an eight-point lead, at 26-18. WACO scored three in the final minute of the third and dominated the fourth period and overtime.
Aubri Garnsey led the Warriors with 15 points. Ellah Kissel scored nine. Grace Coble had eight. Molly McLaughlin and Morgan Graber scored six apiece, and Lindsey Roth ended with five.
No. 10 Wolves escape Sanders
LETTS - No. 10 (Class 1A) Winfield-Mount Union came back from a six-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter to win the North Division game 44-43 and give a sour ending to Louisa-Muscatine senior Kylee Sanders, who scored a game-high 17 points to surpass 1,300 points for her career. The WMU defense held the Falcons star to just four points in the second half to erase the lead.
Farrah Nelson led the Wolves with a double-double, collecting 11 poitns and 10 rebounds. Bradie Buffington scored nine points. Jami Wilkerson had eight and five assists. Keetyn Townsley contributed eight points.
Beavers chew past Mid-Prairie
WILTON - Wilton held the visiting Golden Hawks to a combined 10 points in the second and third quarters for the 43-38 River Valley Conference win.
Mid-Prairie (9-9) held a 17-15 halftime lead before Wilton (10-8) used a 12-6 third-quarter advantage to grab the lead.
Maddie Nonnenmann connected on 3-of-6 3-pointers on her way to 16 points and Golden Hawks teammate Myah Lugar connected on four triples and 1-of-2 free throws for her 13 points. She added three assists. Amara Jones had five rebounds and Alyssa McDowell four.
Merschmann outscores Tigers
NEW LONDON - It was nearly impossible to stop Central Lee's Mya Merschmann, who scored 39 points to help the Hawks upend New London 67-34. It was the Tigers fifth loss in a row.
Marah Hartrick scord 10 points to lead New London. Sophie Malott had nine. Ashlyn McSorley scored seven. Natalie Burden had six, and Keaura Williams scored two.
No. 8 West Burlington too much for Comets
ELDON - Cardinal struggled to contain a stacked West Burlington offense in a 79-38 loss. The Falcons scored 20 or more points in the first three quarters to cruise to victory.
Alexia McClure scored 15 points in the loss. Nicoa McClure had nine.
Keota falls at Sigourney
SIGOURNEY - The Eagles lost the South Iowa Cedar League game 59-20 to the Savages.
It was an 11-6 score after the first quarter but Sigourney extended its lead to 32-13 by halftime.
'We played very well in the first quarter and really did an excellent job on their leading scorer, Kaylee Weber,” Keota head coach Jeff Sprouse said. 'We got in foul trouble late in the quarter and the game got away in the second quarter.”
Weber had eight in the first half and 14 in the second to finish with 22 and surpassed 1,000 points in her career with 1,017.
Keota had a leading scorer named Weber as well as Sky Weber tallied 11 points and six rebounds. Bailey Sieren scored seven points.
WACO's Aubri Garnsey plays defense against Keota's Nicole Clarahan in December. Garnsey led the Warriors to an overtime win against Danville Tuesday with a game-high 15 points. (File)
