WACO girls drop first game

KEOSAUQUA - The WACO girls' basketball team traveled to Keosauqua for their season opener on Tuesday night. The Warriors fell 53-36 to Van Buren, the eighth-ranked team in Class 2A.
The two teams traded punches in the first two quarters. Van Buren led 15-12 after the first quarter and 26-18 at halftime.
Van Buren had its best quarter in the third, winning the period 17-10 to take a 43-28 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Van Buren outscored WACO 10-6.
The leading scorer for WACO was Kristen Conley, who scored 13 points on 3-6 shooting and 3-4 from three-point land. She also led the team with seven rebounds.
Clara Schmitz had a nice day shooting as well. She went 5-0 from the field and 1-2 from behind the arc for 11 points. Nadiyah Brown finished the game with five points. Laney Graber scored three, and both Aubri Garnsey and Maysan Lee finished with two.
The Warriors fell to 0-1 to start the season. They'll host Wapello in their next game, on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
