WAYLAND - It was tough sledding for the WACO girls' offense on Tuesday night against Wapello. The Warriors had a tough time putting the ball in the basket, especially in the second half, and ended up falling 44-23.
WACO's best offense in the first half was Nadiyah Brown in the post. Brown bothered the smaller Arrows down low, scoring 11 first half points, five in the first quarter and six in the second.
Unfortunately for WACO, the team had just 14 points at halftime despite Brown's 11. At the break, Wapello led 23-14.
The Warriors had a tough time with an aggressive Arrow press in the second half. That combined with a mythotic Wapello offense silenced any thought of a Warrior comeback. WACO had five different scorers in the second half, but nobody had more than two points in the final two quarters, and they scored just nine second-half points as a team.
After the game, head coach Caylon Devaul talked about a frustrating second half.
'When you don't defend it right, (Wapello's offense) is awfully frustrating,” Devaul said. 'We should have been a little more active up on the ball. We made some mistakes, but we'll get better next time.”
Brown finished the night with 13 points on 6-9 shooting. Morgan Graber had three points. Grace Conwell, Clara Schmitz and Laney Graber each scored two points, and Maysan Lee had one points, and led the team with three steals.
WACO had 18 rebounds no the night. L. Graber and Lee co-led the squad with four each. L. Graber also had two assists.
WACO is now 0-2 to begin the season. The Warriors will host West Burlington in their next game, on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
