WAYLAND -- The WACO girls had their hands full with a red-hot Notre Dame team on Thurday night. The Nikes, who were coming off a three-point upset of No. 13 (2A) Van Buren on Tuesday, came into Wayland and knocked off WACO 47-26.
WACO kept it close early on. Nadiyah Brown scored five points in the first quarter and Clara Schmitz added three, but Van Buren still led 10-8 after the first period.
Notre Dame began to hit their outside shots in the second quarter and pulled away for a 25-13 lead at halftime. Brown's five points still led the Warriors.
The Warriors had trouble scoring in the second half. Van Buren led 33-16 after three quarters and pulled away to win by 21.
'We didn't take care of what we needed to take care of,” said head coach Caylon DeVaul after the game. 'They're a good basketball team, but right now we're our own worst enemy. When you turn the ball over, and you travel, and you make those passes you're not supposed to make, that's going to happen.”
Schmitz scored nine points on the night to lead WACO. Six of her nine points were scored in the fourth quarter.
Brown and Maysan Lee had five points apiece in the loss. Ashleigh Hallett had three, and Aubri Garnsey and Lindsey Roth scored two each.
