WINFIELD — It was all Warriors in the first eight minutes of Thursday night’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division rivalry game between neighbors WACO and Winfield-Mount Union.
WACO dominated the first quarter of the game, setting the Warriors up to cruise for the final three quarters of a 58-37 victory.
The Warriors used an aggressive pressure defense that WMU couldn’t figure out early on. WACO took a commanding 20-2 lead into the second quarter.
“It takes a lot of pressure off the rest of the game when we can pick up some steals and slow them down on offense,” said WACO head coach Lisa Graber.
The Wolves played the Warriors much closer from that point forward. WACO led 37-15 at halftime and 49-24 after three quarter, and WMU won the final eight minutes 13-9.
“We couldn't get the ball past their press,” said Wolves’ head coach Mendy McCreight. “They're quick and they're in the passing lanes. It's just something we have to grow and learn from.”
WACO’s Emma Wagler had a huge night. She led the team with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Ella Huisenga continued the inside barrage with 10 points and two blocked shots.
Marie Farmer scored nine points for the Warriors. Naomi Egli had six. Halle Shelman and Brenna Graber scored five each. Shanea Riley scored three, and Madelyn Farmer chipped in two.
Madisen Kellogg put up 17 points and 11 rebounds for WMU. Suttyn Schlee scored nine. Kaylynn Kellogg had four. Maggie Hutton and Lilly Heckethorn put up three points each, and Pacey Schlee scored one.
