WINFIELD - The WACO girls' defense put on a clinic on Saturday in an SEISC cross over game at Winfield-Mt. Union. The Warriors held the Wolves to under 10 points in each of the four quarters and ran away with a 47-20 win.
The Warriors jumped on the Wolves often. Aubri Garnsey scored a couple of quick baskets and four WACO players found the scoreboard in the first quarter. Jenna Buffington had the only points for W-MU, and WACO led 12-2 after one.
A four-point second quarter for Jobey Malone and three more for Buffington kept the Wolves in it in the second quarter. WACO once again used a balanced attack to stay on top, though, using four different scorers again to stretch their lead to 22-11 at halftime.
Clara Schmitz went off in the second half to lead the Warriors to a blowout win. She scored 12 points over the last two quarters, three more than W-MU scored as a team.
'She's got a knack for getting the ball and getting open,” said WACO head coach Caylon DeVaul about his junior. 'Her thing is, she'll settle for a wide-open shot, which isn't terrible, but she'll pass up a wide-open layup. She's starting to figure out to go to the hole and go to the hole strong, and she'll get rewarded with a layup or a foul.”
Schmitz scored 16 points total to lead the Warriors. Maysan Lee had eight points. Aubri Garnsey scored seven.
Nadiyah Brown had five points in the win. Kristen Conley scored four. Grace Conwell had three. Ashleigh Hallett and Laney Graber scored two each.
The WACO girls were coming off a 42-37 loss to Holy Ttrinity on Friday night. Clara Schmitz scored 14 in the loss.
W-MU was led by Buffington, who scored eight points in the loss. Malone finished the day with six points. Liana Sweezer had three. Carlee Sloan scored two, and Madie Anderson had one.
'They were really active defensively, but we were sluggish,” said W-MU head coach Mitch Wachs. 'We're not getting to the line. We're not being super aggressive with the ball. We're dribbling just to dribble (and) we're not putting any pressure on the defense. That's part of being young.”
The Wolves were one day removed from a 61-39 loss to Iowa Mennonite. IMS star Suzanna Yoder had 36 points in that game. Buffington led the Wolves with 16.
