WACO girls take 3rd in home meet

WAYLAND — Three area track and field teams were at WACO High School on Tuesday for the Warriors’ coed relays.
The Warriors welcomed Van Buren County and New London on the girls side, along with five other schools. WACO’s boys team was the only Union area team in action.
The WACO girls had the best night of anyone. The Warriors had four wins en route to a third-place finish. Van Buren took fourth, and New London tied with Tri-County for fifth.
WACO’s girls won both hurdle springs. Molly McLaughlin won the 110-meter hurdles in 17.7 seconds, beating out teammate Zoey Dennler (18.5 seconds). Dennler took the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the tape in 1:19.63.
The Warrior girls had two relay wins. The shuttle hurdle team crossed the tape in 54.58 seconds, and the shuttle hurdle team won in 1:18.39.
Van Buren County had four wins on the girls side. In the 800-meter run, Isabel Manning finished first, in 2:36, just eight seconds faster than teammate Faith Neeley, who took second, in 2:44.
The VBC girls had a couple of relay wins. The 4x800 team won in 11:30.36, and the distance medley team won in 4:55.61.
VBC also had one field event victory. Ella Jirak out-lept the competition by clearing 4 feet, 8 inches.
The WACO boys had three wins on the day, two of which came in relays. The spring medley team topped the field in 1:44.28, and the shuttle hurdle squad took first in 1:14.77.
The WACO boys’ only individual win came in the 110-meter hurdles. Zach Schmitz took the top spot, winning in 18.38 seconds.
