WACO girls win first game

WAYLAND - The WACO girls' basketball team won its first game of the season this weekend. After dropping their SEISC South Division game against No. 12 (3A) Central Lee 57-23 on Friday night, the Warriors grinded out a 27-25 win over Keota on Saturday.
The Warriors had trouble containing Central Lee's offense in the first half on Friday. Central Lee held a 15-10 led after the first quarter and 32-20 at halftime. WACO could never get back into the game after the break.
Despite the loss, eight different Warriors found the scoreboard. Nadiyah Brown led the team with six points. Clara Schmitz had five points and five rebounds. Laney Graber and Aubri Garnsey finished with five points apiece. Maysan Lee scored four. Kristen Conley and Ashleigh Hallett had three apiece, and Lona Farrier scored one.
Saturday's game was the definition of a defensive struggle. Neither team reached double-digits in any of the four quarters as both WACO and Keota scrapped to get points.
The Warriors led 8-2 after the first quarter, but Keota cut that lead to 12-10 at halftime, and then took a 19-18 lead into the fourth quarter. WACO scored the comeback win in the fourth, taking the final period 9-6 to secure a two-point win.
Schmitz had a big game Saturday, scoring 11 points to lead the way. Garnsey finished the day with four points. Hatllett and Graber each scored three. Lee and Brown scored two each.
Conley scored just one point i the win but led the team with seven rebounds and four assists. Grace Conwell scored one point as well.
The Warriors are now 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the South Division. They'll be in Danville tonight (Tuesday) for another South Division showdown.
