DES MOINES — Henry County is sending a total of five wrestlers to the boys’ state meet in Des Moines this week, three from WACO and two from New London.
The Warriors, who competed in the Class 1A District 7 meet in Pleasantville, had three District champions, the only three of any Henry County school. The Tigers picked up two second-place finishes in Class 1A District 12.
WACO’s Ian Maize went 2-0 to win the 106-pound bracket in Pleasantville, defeating Van Buren County’s Leo Jirak by a 10-6 decision in the championship match.
Returning state placewinners Gage Samo and Louden Huisenga both went unbeaten as well. Samo won at 120, nipping Alburnett’s Owen Henriksen 5-3 in the championship bout, while Huisenga went 3-0 with three dominant victories.
In Wilton, New London’s Kane Forseen went 3-1 en route to a second-place finish at 126. Forseen won the second-place match over Louisa-Muscatine’s Jaxson Wedekind by major decision, defeating him 9-0.
Gage Burden is going back to state after a second-place finish at 138. Burden went 2-1 on the day with a pin fall and major decision, and didn’t have to wrestle for true second.
Both of Henry County’s Class 2A teams failed to send anyone to state. Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union had five third-place finishers at the Class 2A District 4 meet in Centerville, and Mt. Pleasant had five third-place finishers at the Class 2A District 12 meet in Williamsburg.
