WACO, Pekin win Union area battles
Week 6 of small school football highlighted by big scores

The importance of every week of football grows day by day as the 2024 postseason quickly approaches. A big night in small school football saw huge scoring performances from WACO and Pekin among others.
WACO 67, New London 42
Over 100 points were scored between WACO and New London as the two traded haymaker after haymaker in Union area eight-man battle.
Leading WACO to victory was Louden Huisenga, who rushed for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Clayton Miller threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 55 yards and a score.
Trey Edeker found the end zone twice on the ground for WACO. Huisenga and Gage Samo caught one touchdown pass each. Hayden Shelman and Lane Bachman each scored on the ground.
New London’s Gavin Menke-Bailey threw for 219 yards and two scores, while also running for 105 yards. London Franklin rushed for two touchdowns, threw for one and caught two, totaling 152 yards receiving. Logan Franklin had 96 yards and a touchdown receiving, and Carter Adams had a defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery.
No. 6 (8-Player) Iowa Valley 72, Winfield-Mount Union 30
The Wolves took their shot at first place Iowa Valley with the district lead on the line, but the Tigers were too much for the now third-place WMU football team.
“This one stings, because we were playing for a division title,” said WMU head coach Scott McCarty. “But we still have two very winnable games.”
Lane Genkinger rumbled for 122 yards in the loss, while also going for 86 yards and a score in the pass game. Jake Edwards threw for a touchdown and rn for two. Max Edwards had 83 yards receiving.
Defensively, the Wolves had two takeaways. Max Edwards had a pick-six, and Cooper Buffington recovered a fumble.
Pekin 61, Highland 13
Pekin bounced back from its first loss last week with a 61-point three-quarter swing against Highland.
The Panthers led the game 20-0 after one quarter, 40-0 at halftime and 61-0 after three.
Nolan Glick ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns for the Panthers. Will Adam threw for 152 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 84 yards and a score. Riley Smith and Landon Crow both found the end zone on the ground, and Smith had a pick-six.
Highland’s Garrett Beeson and Caleb Wheeler each scored in the loss.
Columbus 54, Louisa-Muscataine 0
Columbus used a 41-0 first half performance to power past the Falcons in a district clash.
Trevor Phillips threw for 177 yards and two scores for the Wildcast. Riley Kaalberg scored three times on the ground.
Danville 7, Van Buren County 6
Aiden McEntee’s third quarter touchdown run cut what was a 7-0 halftime deficit down to one point, but the Warriors couldn’t claw back against the Bears.
Bryce Moquin ran for 101 yards in the loss. Kamden Nusbaum and Caale Mellinger combined for 19.5 tackles.
Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 54, Cardinal 26
Cardinal led this game 26-24 but could never score again as the Rockets rallied to keep the Comets unbeaten.
Despite the loss, Alijah Fraise threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns. Chase Johnson had 137 yards receiving and two scores, and Treyton Hafele went for 118 yards receiving as well.
No. 8 Sigourney-Keota 42, Pella Christian 21
The Cobras doubled up the Eagles to stay unbeaten in district play, taking one big step closer to the playoffs.
Isaca Bruns continued to thrash defenses, rushing for 232 yards and three scores. Brady Clark and Jacob Libe each scored on the ground.
Mid-Prairie 24, Mediapolis 8
The red-hot Golden Hawks scored the first 24 points in a game at Mediapolis and are now 3-0 in district play after an 0-3 non-district schedule.
Hudson Ehrenfelt rumbled for 141 yards and three scores in the win. Brady Weber hit Ace Peck for a touchdown pass.
