WACO prevails, SK storms back, Pekin rolls

Week 3 of the 2024 Iowa high school football season was filled with huge area games. The area’s small school slate saw some of the best matchups between Union teams, including WACO hosting Winfield-Mount Union, as well as Sigourney-Keota traveling to Mid-Prairie.
WACO 40, Winfield-Mount Union 24
A frenetic pace early slowed down throughout a fierce Class 8-Player rivalry battle, and it was WACO that pulled through, turning a 20-18 halftime lead into a 16-point victory.
Louden Huisenga dashed for 149 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Warriors’ charge. Clayton Miller through for 120 yards and two interceptions, and rushed for 79, and Hayden Shelman was electric in the kick return game, racking up 185 return yards, including a 74-yard touchdown return.
Winfield-Mount Union’s Jake Edwards threw for 246 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, while also rushing for 106 yards and a score.
Lane Genkinger ran for 89 yards and a touchdown, and also caught seven passes for 128 yards and a score, while Nicholas Sparrow caught three passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.
No. 7 (8-Player) Iowa Valley 72, New London 21
The Tigers couldn’t contain talented Iowa Valley quarterback Nolan Kriegel, who ran for 157 yards and three scores as the visiting Tigers took down the hosting Tigers in a district clash.
New London’s Gavin Menke-Bailey threw for 62 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 35 yards and a score. London Franklin reached the end zone on a 25-yard touchdown reception, and Brigham Porter scored on a kick return.
Sigourney-Keota 21, Mid-Prairie 14
A late blocked punt helped the Cobras complete a comeback road victory in Wellman. Sigourney-Keota trailed 14-6 after three quarters but scored 15 in the fourth to stun the Golden Hawks.
Sigourney-Keota only completed one pass in the win. The Cobra ground game was led by a 116-yard, two-touchdown performance by Isaac Bruns, and Ike Molyneaux ran for 59 yards and a score.
Mid-Prairiee’s Brady Weber threw for 194 yards and a touchdown, while Hudson Ehrenfelt ran for 73 yards and a score.
Pekin 54, Danville 10
Pekin continued to absolutely dominate the opening month of play, this time dousing Danville by 44 points.
Quarterback Will Adam rushed for 163 yards and five touchdowns. Nolan Glick had 82 receiving yards, and ran for 75 yards, and Henry Adam found the end zone twice.
The Panther defense dominated again, not only holding Danville to 10 points, but scoring themselves on a 65-yard pick-six by Robert Brown.
Highland 13, Van Buren County 0
The Highland defense continued to shine, as the Huskies shut out VBC on the road.
Highland led just 6-0 at halftime on a pair of Jared Diaz field goals, andscored on a Garrett Beason rush in teh fourth quarter to put the game away.
The Huskies picked off an incredible five passes in the game, including three by Diaz. Tyler Pierson and Colten Sypherd each had picks, and Logan McFarland recovered a fumble.
Bryce Moquin led VBC on the ground, rushing for 66 yards. Kamden Nusbaum had 56 yards receiving.
Davis County 69, Cardinal 6
The Comets couldn’t slow down red-hot Davis County squad. The lone Cardinal score was a 73-yard touchdown pass from Alijah Frase to Chase Johnson.
No. 8 (A) Lisbon 49, Columbus 6
The Wildcats couldn’t keep up with a tremendous Lisbon team, as the Lions heeld the Wildcats to just one score.
Despite the loss, Riley Kaalberg rushed for 101 yards and one touchdown.
