SPRINGVILLE — Statistics are a clinical way of looking at a football game and do not always tell the real story. WACO was led by a strong defense and special teams in a 56-24 road victory over the Orioles in 8-man football Friday.
That combination gave the Warriors good field position all night, twice starting drives inside the Springville 15-yard line. Total plays was Springville 62-55, first downs WACO 13-11, yards passing Springville 99-55, but total yards 341-262 WACO.
"Our offense did a good job of capitalizing,“ WACO head coach Chad Edeker said. ”Our total offensive stats were not great, but that is because of the short fields we created.“
WACO led 19-6 after a Jonah Clark touchdown but it was 19-14 after a 52-yard scoring pass by Springville. Simeon Reichenbach scored his third touchdown for a 27-14 lead at halftime.
“We had a dominant third quarter,” Edeker said, “allowed just 40 yards on defense and scored three times.” Reichenbach, Jon Rice and Isaac Oswald each ran into the end zone for a 48-14 lead to start the fourth quarter.
A key to the game was WACO’s ability to play a lot of kids, providing needed breaks in the heat.
“We were stronger in the second half than Springville,” Edeker said. “The physicalness of our running backs wore them down as the game went on.”
Riechenbach rung up 155 yards rushing on 10 carries with touchdowns of 10, 31, 77 and 19 yards.
WACO plays at HLV Friday.
WACO teammates Tyler Sutton (18), Kolton Connelly (26) and Jonah Clark (7) block for Simeon Reichenbach (22) in a scrimmage against Springville at Wayland in 2020. Friday WACO won a game with Reichenbach rushing for 155 yards and four touchdowns. (Doug Brenneman/Union)
