WAPELLO ? The WACO boys? and girls? basketball teams dropped a pair of close Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division games at Wapello on Tuesday night.
The boys fell by a score of 56-52, and the girls lost, 36-33.
In the boys? game, WACO had a 27-21 lead going into halftime, but their third-quarter struggles gave Wapello an opening.
?In the third quarter, we didn?t get anything done,? WACO Coach Bob Hilmer said. ?Our shooting percentage was not good, and they (the Indians) scored just about every time down the court. We sent them to the free throw line, too.?
The Warriors put up only seven points in the third quarter, while Wapello was able to score 17 to take the lead, 38-34.
WACO was unable to take it back in the fourth quarter as Wapello maintained a four-point advantage to claim the win.
Aaron Barnhart scored 15 points for the Warriors; Ayers added 14 points and Ben Fear chipped in 10. Ayers finished with a double-double, dishing 10 assists in the game. He also had five steals and eight rebounds. Barnhart pulled down a team-high nine boards.
In the girls? game, WACO fell behind after a six-point second quarter and, despite holding Wapello to only four points in the third quarter, the Warriors were unable to catch up on the scoreboard in the loss.
Stats for the game were not available at press time.
The girls? team is now 5-8 on the season and 4-7 in the SEISC North. The boys are 4-8 overall and 4-6 in the SEISC North.
The Warriors will host Winfield-Mt. Union on Friday, starting with the girls? game at 6 p.m.
