WAYLAND — WACO volleyball enough on Monday night to get by Iowa Valley and punch its ticket to the second round of the Class 1A Region 7 bracket.
The Warriors topped the Tigers in three straight set, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-19.
Despite the three set win, Iowa Valley made it tough on the Warriors.
It wasn’t like that to start though.
WACO looked like it was going make quick work of Iowa Valley in the opening set as a kill from Emma Wagler made it 9-2 and then two more points pushed the Warrior lead to 11-2, their largest of the night in any set.
However, that lead began to evaporate as a block from the Tigers kick started an 8-0 scoring run that began with WACO leading 19-13 and ended with Iowa Valley leading 20-19.
The Warriors didn’t wavier, after tying at 21-21, Iowa Valley wouldn’t score again.
Set two was more of the same.
WACO went up by as much as much as five at 9-4, but once again Iowa Valley answered.
The Warriors would never trail though.
Back-to-back kills late knotted the set at 19-19, but back-to-back points capped off by a kill from Meredith Roth gave the Warriors all they would need.
An Iowa Valley kill pulled the game to within one at 24-23, but WACO got the point needed to seal set two.
Set three was much tighter throughout.
The Warriors and Tiger tied eight times before WACO created space late.
The final tie came at 19-19, but WACO closed it out with the final six points.
WACO will take on Central City (23-11) on Wednesday in the 1A Region 6 quarterfinal.
