KALONA ? The W-MU girls took seventh of nine teams in the Iowa Mennonite School Early Bird Cross-country Meet yesterday, Aug. 30, and the WACO girls were right behind them.
WACO senior Madison Roth was the team?s top finisher, taking eighth overall with a time of 17:41.
The rest of the WACO team left a gap after Roth, and the team score totaled 244.
?Eighth is probably higher than I expected ? there were a lot of schools, bigger schools,? said WACO?s first-year coach Cinda Blake.
The competition included 4A schools City High, Muscatine and CR Jefferson.
City High took the top spot for the girls? race, getting all five scorers across the line in the top 10 places for 29 total points.
The W-MU girls were led by freshman Grace Edwards, who finished at 18:29 for 20th place, but a closer pack earned the Wolves the spot just above WACO in the team standings.
The W-MU boys took 11th out of 12 teams.
Sophomore Kollin Lintz was the number one runner for the Wolves, coming in 46th with a time of 21:22.
That time ? not the place ? is the important factor for W-MU Coach Cody Wolfe.
?I?m happy with where our times are at this early in the season,? he said. ?It shows we?ve put in the work.?
Muscatine won the boys? race with a total of 45 points, with their last scorer coming across in 17th place.
